Dog Days in Svalbard

April 9, 2016 by Grit Rock 1 Comment

Expedition update: sitting tight for a potential Monday departure. Some day soon – once I am picked up from ice and am safely on my way to Kathmandu – I will write up in great detail this gripping drama of geopolitics that sums up a battle for the Arctic, Russia’s posturing and, of course, the climate change. As trying as waiting for an expedition departure is, it was great to spend the last few days exploring Svalbard archipelago through all means of transport: snowmobiles, dog sledding and on touring skis. All in the company of polar legends: Eric Philips, Eric Larsen and Dixie Dansercoer. Hearing extraordinary stories of journeys, insane polar crossings of 100+ days, pain for the areas they love that will no longer be the same. Epic!

In the meantime, today was spent skiing with a sled in urban settings of Longyearbyen and testing new technology that I will be using on ‪#‎Everest‬ and‪#‎northpole‬. Check out this VR 360 video of dog sledding in Svalbard. Use your finger or arrows on your keyboard to get into my sled
